Active Mums Cycling in Devon began in earnest in January 2016. Its funding came from Public Health, Devon Local Sustainable Transport Fund and Active Devon. Active Mums has proved really popular and really got mums in Devon talking, often via Facebook to get friends involved. So far 8 towns across Devon have engage and develop Active Mums cycling projects.
Statistics:
- Over 200 mums took part in the sessions
- 16 Mums took part in Ride leader and breeze training to sustain the projects
- Facebook was the best way of promoting the rides and contacting local mums
- Active Devon worked with 6 different bike shops that were able to support the project
- Mum's have since been out and bought bikes and trailers to continue cycling after the initial block of 4-6 sessions finished.
- Active Devon are now working with bikeability to offer free 1-1 confidence bike training for mums that would like to cycle on roads.
Quotes:
The majority of the mums that took part in this project have not ridden a bike in years. As we provided all of the equipment mums just needed to turn up, so many barriers were reduced.
Mums have said:
"I can't wait to go out cycling with the family now I can put my child on the back of my bike rather than expecting my husband to do it!'Its a great activity to do in the day time! It gets me out and about seeing new things''I have now gone out and bought a bike and trailer so we can continue cycling together!'
Active Devon staff have worked with the ride leaders to put together a few short films about the sessions
