GreaterSport Case Studies on Individual Development
Chris Hurst – Talent Match
Six months ago Chris had hit rock bottom, he had no motivation or aspirations to work and found himself isolating himself from family and friends. He said, “I would get so far then just give up and go back to my old ways.”
Chris heard about Dame Kelly Holmes Get On Track programme run by Link4Life and GreaterSport and did something that he’d never done before - took the initiative to sign up.
Throughout his 8 weeks on the programme Chris gained confidence by being challenged physically and socially, whilst gaining employability skills and a Sports Leadership Award. GreaterSport’s Talent Coach saw Chris as an ideal young person for Greater Manchester Talent Match, a programme designed to support young people not in employment or education gain employment.
GreaterSport helped Chris to gain a Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification and he’s now working as a cleaner at a leisure centre whilst completing his 6 weeks of work experience as a fitness instructor.
When asked where he sees himself in 5 years he said; “I’d like to have completed a L3 Personal Qualification and maybe travel the world working as a Personal Trainer helping people change their lives by keeping fit.”

Rob Halliwell – Talent Match
With no sense of direction or idea of what he wanted to do, Rob found himself lost in a whirlwind of boredom and no confidence. Through the Get On Track programme, lead by athletes from the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust and run by Link4Life and GreaterSport, he gained a number of skills such as working and communicating within team environments and succeeded in passing Sports Leaders and First Aid qualifications.
Rob then signed up to the GreaterSport Greater Manchester Talent Match programme which helps young people not in employment or education gain employment. Rob was given support and guidance when applying for jobs, volunteering and training opportunities. During the summer Rob volunteered as a disability coach for Link4Life where he developed a keen interest in working with children.
Rob embraced the support from GreaterSport and after coming across a local nursery, Rob plucked up the courage to go in and hand in his CV. Following on from a conversation with the manager and a successful trial period Rob is now working full time as an apprentice and has been provided with all his training as a Level 2 Child Practitioner.
