Sunnydown Cross Golf Open Day: it’s golf but not as you know it.
Community Golf CIC, a not for profit organisation, take pride in innovation and in doing things just that bit differently. Their spirit of difference means that they’re always experimenting and are never afraid to give things a try.
Following on from the Active Surrey supported Satellite Club (a group set up by an established local club to target 14-25 year olds), Community Golf worked in collaboration with Sunnydown School in order for them to host their very own inaugural Street Golf Open Day on Tuesday 1 November 2016.
Teams from 10 schools entered, an amazing 96 pupils in total. The day comprised playing six Street Golf holes and nine putting and chipping skills challenges situated around the grounds and in the school buildings.
The course designed by Sunnydown’s Head of PE, Ben Wright and Community Golf’s Mandy Jarvis, offered students the opportunity to experience golf in a wide ranging, non- traditional golf environment. Discussing the partnership with Community Golf, Ben Wright said “Having worked with Community Golf for over a year, children now see golf as a sport accessible to them”
James Lovell, Sports Projects Officer at Active Surrey said “Active Surrey is committed to getting more young people into sport and is proud to support this exciting project through Satellite Club funding”.
Satellite clubs, the £49 million, National Lottery funded, Sport England initiative are extensions of community sports clubs, which use different venues such as secondary schools or colleges to offer a range of sports to young people who may not be regularly active, or lack the confidence to join a sports club.
Active Surrey, alongside National Governing Bodies of sport have supported 172 satellite clubs across Surrey, engaging over 6500 young people since 2012.
96 pupils from 10 schools took part in the day.
Chipping and Putting challenges in the gym.
