Local Trust and CSP Network have much in common – we both want to improve lives.
A community and resident led approach, helping residents to identify what matters most to them and understand what barriers they face to living an improved life is an approach adopted by both Local Trust and CSPs. A number of Big Local areas are already collaborating with CSPs, receiving guidance and support to maximise sport and physical activity opportunities to improve their communities.
A Big Local partnership is a group of people, who together are responsible for guiding the overall direction of Big Local in their area. They bring together all the local talent, ambitions, skills and energy from individuals, groups and organisations who want to make their area an even better place to live. A Big Local plan describes how each area will work towards becoming an even better place to live. Local Trust fund at least £1m to each Big Local partnership to make a massive and lasting difference to their communities.
CSW working with the Cars area Big Local
In 2013 CSW Sport secured funding from the Sport England Sportivate Innovation Fund to work with the Cars area Big Local. Supporting the Cars area with the development of their plan for the £1m of funding, CSW co-ordinated a range of demand-led activities, from skateboarding to football. The projects worked with over 200 young people aged 11-25 in the area, investing £20,000.
As with all Big Local areas, the resident led steering group make all the decisions on how the £1m will be spent. Over the last 2 years the group has invested in CSW Sport to provide a member of staff one day a week to lead on the sport priority in their plan. The CSP has brokered a range of partnerships and opportunities that have benefited the community.
The Cars area has over 3,000 residents and 1,200 homes. The Big Local plan has six priority areas, all of which CSW Sport seek to understand how sport and physical activity can integrate with and support these priorities.

Additional Information about Local Trust
- Local Trust’s mission is to enable residents to make their communities and their areas even better places in which to live.
- They do this by helping residents develop and use their skills and confidence to identify what matters most to them, and to take action to change things for the better, now and in the future.
- They provide a mix of funding and finance to support people to make sustainable change, maximise impact and make the best use of scarce resources.
- We believe that a community and resident led approach to creating lasting change:
develops the skills and confidence of the people involved and enables them to work with others to the benefit of their communitybuilds on the opportunities and assets available in each community creates lasting, long term solutions.
- Underlying this approach is a belief that residents have a capacity and desire to drive change, and can achieve lasting and positive results when supported by those they trust and respect thereby building skills, confidence, networks, relationships and expertise in each community.
- You can read more about our approach in our document which describes our strategy for 2014-2017.
