Nearly 2,000 school pupils from across Greater Manchester took part in the 2015 Greater Manchester Sainsbury’s Summer School Games in July 2015 at various iconic sporting venues across Manchester. In total there were 25 competitions across 14 Sports, which included Athletics, Goalball, Tennis, BMX, Sitting Volleyball, Football, Netball, Handball, Dodgeball, Golf, Softball, Rugby, Rounders and New Age Kurling.
200 young volunteers came together to form the School Games Crew, along with numerous community clubs, NGBs and School Games Officers’s to support the on-the-day competition delivery as well as 22 GreaterSport staff. This was the 9th Greater Manchester School Games, which allows young children the use of world-class facilities across Greater Manchester including the national Cycling Centre and The Regional Athletics Arena.
The Summer School Games inspires young people to participate and compete in sport. To help young people continue their participation in sport, every participant receives information on where they can find local sporting opportunities via the GreaterSport activity finder. GreaterSport also work with NGBs and various external partners to try and find community clubs to support the delivery of the School Games to help make the transition of young people from school to community sport easier.
“It is so important for our children to be given opportunities to compete alongside their mainstream peers in excellent venues and facilities across the city, on an equal footing and achieve”.
