London Sport (LS) provides small grants to London organisations and coaches to increase sport and physical activity, and support partners to access external funding.
In 2014-15 London Sport invested:
- £620,000 into creating 449 Satellite Clubs across London
- £1,322,069 in Sportivate projects resulting in 32,905 participants
- £21,197 in London's workforce through a coaching bursary, with 38 coaches gaining further knowledge and skills
LS also provides one-to-one support and advice to London organisations applying for external funding to increase sport and physical activity participation. This service has supported partners to secure just over £3 million of external funding, including 6 successful Community Sport Activation Fund applications.
As an example of the impact of the support, London Sport worked with Streatham Youth and Community Trust (SYCT), a small community organisation based in a deprived part of Lambeth in South London, to gain funding to improve their Conyers Road facility. LS supported SYCT to secure £156,000 in funding that would bring in a whole new adult audience whilst at the same time improving the facility for the young people that were already users.
“Our Youth Centre was built in the 60’s and hardly touched since then. I was desperate to improve the facility and started thinking about seeking capital funding for the refurbishments. I had a few meetings with London Sport, which helped me to establish a focus for the refurbishment works and firm up the community benefit. Without this I really don’t think my grant applications would have been successful.”
