North Yorkshire Sport creates new ‘Go Lead’ Support Programme for Young People during Covid-19

Submitted on 30th September 2020

During the Coronavirus restrictions North Yorkshire Sport developed their own leadership programme to support young people aged 16-25 called Go Lead.

Working with athlete mentor and former Olympian James Kirton the young people were invited to take part in a series of short, online videos. The videos were hosted on the recently formed online platform yhlearning.co.uk and supported with worksheets.

Go Lead focussed on building key leadership and resilience skills and supported the young people’s physical and mental wellbeing. The heart of the programme was to provide the participants with the tools to support the rebuilding of their community through positive social action.

Young people were challenged to take ownership for their development and work through a series of learning activities and reflective work in areas including.

  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Self-Management
  • Goal Setting
  • Problem Solving

The development programme used principles of sport and physical activity as a tool to bridge the gap between inequalities in young people.

The programme draws on the benefits of Youth Social Action. At the end of each programme the young people were encouraged to engage in some form of positive social action which in turn benefited their community.
