Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport supporting the falls prevention agenda

Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport have worked in partnership with National Institute of Health Research’s Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care, East Midlands (NIHR CLAHRC EM) to contribute to the creation of the Falls Management and Exercise (FaME) toolkit.

The partnership started in 2015 when Leicestershire and Rutland were part of the PhISICAL study (Physical activity Implementation Study In Community-dwelling AduLts) which aimed to look at the effectiveness of FAME. This was delivered via the local authorities with Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport taking on the central co-ordination role. This included;

  • Development of Service Specification, Grant Agreement & Information Sharing Agreements
  • Financial Management of Grant
  • Collation of locality data utilising standardised monitoring & evaluation reports and impact templates
  • Six monthly progress reports to CCG Funders
  • Coordinating PSI training across the STP footprint utilising Later Life as the training provider
  • Coordinate a programme of Shared Learning Events to enable continuous
  • improvement; 2 per year for PSI instructors and 2 per year for Locality
  • Lead Officers
  • Development and implementation of a Quality Assurance Procedure
  • Creation of a standardised promotional material across the STP footprint
  • Dedicated Falls Management page on LRS website
  • Resources Development of standardised home exercise card sheets
  • Coordination of purchasing of programme equipment
  • Development of GP consent form

On the back of successful FaME delivery, Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport alongside Leicestershire Public Health wrote a falls business case for additional funding to continue the programme but with more consistency across Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland. The three local clinical commissioning groups have commissioned ‘Steady Steps’ which is our local Fame delivery model.

Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport led on the creation of the return on investment tool and implementation Gantt chart and as well as assisting with the business case and collecting local case studies alongside local authority partners.

Notes to Editors

  • In 2016/17 there were 2,159 falls in Leicestershire, 825 in Leicester and 152 in Rutland that resulted in a hospital admission because of injuries sustained.
  • Falls that result in injury can be very serious - approximately 1 in 20 older people living in the community experience a fracture or need hospitalisation after a fall.
  • Falls and fractures in those aged 65 and above account for over 4 million bed days per year in England alone, at an estimated cost of £2 billion.
  • 35% of over 65’s will experience at least one fall in a year. This figure rises to over 50% for the over 80 age group.
