Running club with a difference picks up pace in York

Posted on 21st September 2016
  • Local News

Focusing on supporting individuals to achieve their milestones, rather than finish times, Fitmums and Friends will bring their unique club ethos to York with their latest club; York Rose Fitmums.

York Rose Fitmums, the first Fitmums club to be set up in North Yorkshire, will officially launch on 21st September 2016 at 6.30pm at Energise, Cornlands Road, YO24 3DX, with runners citywide invited to join the group on their first official outing.

Speaking about the launch, York Rose coordinator Becky Wahl said:

"We're really excited about being able to launch our very own Fitmums club here in York. I've been lucky enough to join the Fitmums at other clubs in East Yorkshire and it really is an experience like no other."

"The enthusiasm and friendliness of the members is second to none; you can't explain it; you have to experience it!"

Members of York Rose will be able to opt for one of a range of distance runs, from 1 mile to 6 and will also be able to take part in fitness walking and social activities. On top of this, the unique shepherding system means no one is left behind, with trained run leaders leading each session.

Sam Barlow, founder of Fitmums and Friends who was recently awarded a British Empire Medal for her contribution to sports development through Fitmums, said:

"Here at Fitmums we like to do things differently, focussing on supporting people and making them feel welcome whilst making sure they're not afraid to get running, even when they haven't done it before."

Sam added:

"Sometimes the 'and friends' of Fitmums gets forgotten, but we really aren't just a running club for mums, nor do you have to be a mum to join. We have lots of men run with us and even lead our sessions; everyone really does fit at Fitmums."

North Yorkshire Sport, the County Sports Partnership for North Yorkshire, and the City of York have provided investment and support into helping Fitmums and Friends set up in York and expand their unique club to North Yorkshire.

David Watson, Chief Executive of North Yorkshire Sport said:

"It's great to be working with such a friendly and supportive club like Fitmums and Friends. Clubs like Fitmums provide easily accessible opportunities for people to get fit and active, and take part in a supportive environment. We are excited that they have chosen to expand in to York, and look forward to working with them further to increase physical activity in North Yorkshire."

Fitmums and Friends is open to men and women aged 16+, with potential members able to attend three sessions before committing to join a group at £35 per year.

Finally, Becky added:

"If you're not sure if Fitmums is for you, then please come and join us at the launch event or one of our other sessions and give the group a try. Everybody fits at Fitmums, so please do join us if you would like to get fit, make friends and have fun!"
