A coordinated approach to professional learning in Derbyshire.
Professional learning for staff in Derbyshire was identified as the critical theme for the Primary PE and Sport Premium. As a result, a countywide CPD group of relevant local partners was established to ensure that all schools are able to access a range of training opportunities in PE, school sport and physical activity.
The group, led by Derbyshire Sport, undertook an extensive audit to understand the training which should be offered to every school to maximise the use of the Premium funding. Each School Sport Partnership (SSP) conducted a training needs analysis and 10 fundamental Professional Learning areas were agreed.
An Ofsted report highlighted in one school that lunchtime supervisors were not interacting with children so the school undertook a Youth Sport Trust Year 5 Change4Life Champions training course. This combined with lunchtime supervisor training, provided the catalyst for changing attitudes at lunchtime and has resulted in a lunchtime multi-activity programme.. The children are taking on more responsibility for their behaviour at the clubs and are learning mutual respect and values around teamwork.
“The Professional Learning support has provided the most impact of any school sport programme. The interaction between the leaders and lunchtime supervisors has been truly amazing and there is a real sense of mutual respect and understanding of a shared vision”.
