Deaf Get Active and Volunteer is a Sport England funded project managed by Living Options Devon in partnership with Active Devon. The project aims to build a bridge between the Deaf *community and sports / activity providers, ensuring Deaf people have opportunities to access sport and physical activity. The project has strong partnerships both nationally and locally with a number of sports providers, NGB’s and national Deaf organisations. Deaf Get Active and Volunteer has supported over fifty six individuals with Deaf Awareness Training and engaged over one hundred and forty nine Deaf people in sports and physical activity.
We are now in year three of the project and will be further developing our opportunities for volunteers with the development of the ‘buddy’ role. We will be offering a more bespoke service to our volunteers, developing individuals where their passions lie and offering training and development to allow them to achieve this. Our volunteer buddies will inspire and support other Deaf people to become active and continue to address barriers that get in the way of participation. We will continue to provide Deaf awareness and BSL support to sports providers. A good example of this is our partnership with local parkruns where we work alongside not just their volunteer network but also within their events as a whole – ensuring there is support for the Deaf community to both participate and volunteer.
