All 43 Active Partnerships achieve the Governance Code

Active Partnerships are delighted to report that all 43 Active Partnerships and the national team have achieved the UK Sport and Sport England governance code which is considered to be among the most advanced in the world.

Lee Mason Chief Executive of the Active Partnerships says;

“the Active Partnerships have been working hard over the last 12 months to ensure that they are compliant with the Governance Code and ensuring their boards demonstrate the principles of good governance. This is an ongoing process and all Active Partnerships and the national team will strive to continually improve and develop in this area”

One example of continuous improvement is how Active Partnerships are working with Sport England and Inclusive Boards on strengthening their Diversity Action Plans through a series of training events and webinars. Further support across the other principles is also being provided across the network.

The governance code was introduced in April 2017 and sets out the levels of transparency, accountability and financial integrity required from organisations who ask for Government and National Lottery funding. The governance codes aims to protect the value for money the public receives from investment into sport and maximise the effectiveness of those investments.

The code has three tiers and isproportionate, expecting the highest standards of good governance from organisations requesting the largest public investments, including:

  • Increased skills and diversity in decision making, with a target of at least 30 per cent gender diversity on boards
  • Greater transparency, for example publishing more information on the structure, strategy and financial position of the organisation
  • Constitutional arrangements that give boards the prime role in decision making.

The Code has, at its heart, five Principles of good governance.

  1. Structure
  2. People
  3. Communication
  4. Standards and Conduct
  5. Policies and Processes
