Encouraging young people in Cornwall to become environmentally conscious

Posted on 23rd January 2023
  • Local News

Encouraging young people in Cornwall to become environmentally conscious about their method of getting to school each day is a key aim of Active Cornwalls Active Travel programme.

Under the banner of One System for Cornwall Schools, Active Cornwall promotes & encourages sustainable travel by bringing together local and national initiatives that schools can engage with. It highlights a collaborative partnership between Active Cornwall, Sustrans, Healthy Cornwall and Cornwall Council showcasing the initiatives from each organisation.

The Active Travel schools platform includes Modeshift Stars, Healthy Schools Cornwall, Sustrans and Eco-Schools. These have been brought together to help schools understand the support available under one collective project. The Eco-Schools programme provides a simple, seven-step framework that helps to empower young people to make a difference in their school, local community and beyond.

Since 1994, millions of young people around the world have worked through the Eco-Schools Seven Steps to gain recognition for their efforts with a prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag.

The programme works across early years, primary and secondary settings and is now the largest educational programme on the planet.

This Eco Schools accreditation is supported through Active Cornwall’s work around Active Travel.

Tim Marrion, Active Cornwall’s manager for Children, Young People and Families, said:

“To date, 33 schools have been awarded Eco Schools green flag accreditation, with a further 56 making progress towards it. The work in schools forms part of a local commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030.”
